A walking trail of approximately 2 km winds along the bank of the Ruja River, making it a perfect place of leisurely walks for nature lovers. Spring at the river is usually filled with the songs of nightingales in bird cherry trees and the sweet fragrance of blossoming spring flowers. What an abundance of colours, fragrances and the sound of the river! The trail is suitable for hiking, Nordic walking and a stroll with a baby carriage. Walking poles may be rented at the Rujiena Tourist information Centre.
The Ruja River most likely got its name from the Estonian word "ruhi" – "through, dugout boat", as the Ruja once upon a time used to be an important waterway, but the Rujiena region was part of the Estonian county Sakala. Currently, the territory rich in biodiversity is part of the Northern Vidzeme biosphere reserve. The floodplain of the river is 250–500 metres wide. It is formed mostly by wet meadows overflown in floods, as well as shrubs and woods.
Hiking may be combined with viewing of the town sights.
