Natural peat pits in the Ķemeri Bog

A gravel-covered road (2 km) leads through bog pits and extraction fields at the north-east part of the Great Ķemeri Bog, where peat extraction was stopped in 1970-ties. After the bog restoration completed in 2006, the formerly dry peat fields are now covered under water. These are the nesting grounds for wading bird species (common redshank, wood sandpiper, and little ringed plover), and sphagnum moss growing has resumed. On the way, you can observe interesting sceneries with dark bog lakelets and large expanses of water with dried trees. In the mornings and evenings, if you move quietly, there is a rather big chance of hearing and seeing beavers in action. This is an object for those, who are interested in nature preservation and restoration of bogs.
