Monument for the victims of the 1941 and 1949 repression

The monument to the victims of repression who were deported from the Gulbene station to Siberia was opened opposite the station building on 14 June 1999. The monument was made by Indulis Ranka who was also the author of the idea. The image of the girl is a symbol of Latvia – the girl sinks into the stone and the stone as if overwhelms her, symbolizing eternity. On the other side of the monument, there is a vampire – a bat, a bloodsucker, which symbolizes evil forces, and in the middle, there is a snake – a symbol of cunning, betrayal and wisdom. The entire ensemble is completed by five boulders which are dedicated to the memory of the hardest years for Latvia and the suffering of the peoples. Nearby, on the wall of the railway station building, there is a commemorative plaque dedicated to the repressed people in 1941 and 1949. The memorial plaque was unveiled on 25 March 1989.
