Nurmuiza (Nurme) Lutheran Church

Thanks to the efforts of the founder of Nurmuiža church (1594) Georg von Fircks and his successors, this church is regarded to be the most outstanding in the North Kurzeme. It has a polygonal apse attached to the rectangular room for the parishioners, a nave and two aisles, sacristy and 47 meters high bell tower built in Neo-Gothic style. In 1674–1687 the monumental building obtained splendid furnishings carved in wood that were complemented by paintings. The altar and the pulpit demonstrate an entirely original manner of some unknown author, in Latvia this manner can be found only in this object. A rostrum, an impressive font foot that can be rarely found in churches, pews with fittings and painted coats of arms, organ gallery with paintings, an organ (1840), confessional and epitaphs also belong to this furniture set. The crypt of Fircks family is located in the basement of the church. In the apse part glitter small windowpanes held by lead strips – a unique monument of 17th century handicraft. The church graveyard is surrounded with a plastered boulder fence covered with tiles. The fence has an arched gate.
