The fisherman sculpture „Oskars”

It was in 2011 that “Oskars” was found and returned to the ownership of the Mērsraga municipality with the care of local residents. Since then, until the summer of 2020, “Oskars”, reminding of bygone times, diligently guarded the Mērsraga People’s House, to take its new place next to Žanis Gulbis’ fishing boat after restoration.

“Oskars” symbolizes a true Mērsraga fisherman – a man of the sea who has experienced both beautiful sunsets and sunburned skin, as well as storms and the weight of wet, fish-filled nets, and the salty taste of the sea.

The center of Mērsraga village – the stones, the boat, and the sculpture “Oskars” are a place not only to take pictures for memory but also to respectfully reflect on those who once, thanks to their work at sea, could build this village.
