Rūmene Manor

Rūmene Manor is surrounded by an 8 ha landscape park nestled at the shore of lake. The extensive reconstruction of the manor was finished in 2009 and it won the best award of Latvian architecture.

Oak, dolomite, antique furniture and the most modern technologies built in the ancient vaulting in a subtle way – this was the concept of architect Zaiga Gaile, author of the manor reconstruction design.

The oldest information about Rūmene dates back to 14th century, but the Rūmene Manor itself has experienced periods of both prosperity and disaster. The manor has have debts many times, it has been pledged and sold from hand to hand. Construction of the owners’ house was initiated in 1876 by the Baron Victor von Düsterlohe and completed by his son Georg according to the design of the architect Theodor Zeiler. The manor ensemble consists of several household buildings, including stables and greenhouses.

Rūmene Manor landscape park is almost 8 ha large, and it is designed by landscape architect Georg Kuphaldt in 1892, who is famous for designing Arcadia Park and Viesturs’ Garden in Riga.

After the agrarian reform 1920, brothers Dauguļi resided in the manor and arranged literature and music evening events there during summer. After World War II the manor housed Rūmene Elementary school, and later – Soviet management office. The rebirth of the manor began with the new millennium when it was purchased by a longstanding family of Latvian entrepreneurs.

Today Rūmene Manor offers enjoying life of real aristocrats – staying in comfortable apartments, having excellent meals and resting by visiting SPA, walking or slow rowing with a boat in the lake or choosing more active pastime, e.g., hunting in the nearby hunting reservation with hunting towers.

Rūmene Manor is located on grounds generously endowed with the beauty of nature. The near Abava River Valley is often referred to as the „Switzerland” of Latvia. By driving the little roads you can enjoy wonderful scenes of blossoming meadows, cornfields, and forests.

Rūmene Manor History

Rūmene Manor is steeped in history. The main manor house itself is a 19th-century Neo-Gothic gem, surrounded by a 7-hectare landscaped park nestled at the shore of its private lake. After having fallen into extreme disrepair over the previous decades, the main manor house, along with four ancillary buildings and the park, has been meticulously restored, preserving the historical essence while tastefully incorporating luxurious comforts and contemporary design elements.

The history of Rūmene Manor stretches back over 600 years. The whole estate, including 12 auxiliary buildings and surrounding territory, once covered over 700 hectares. Up until Latvia’s first independence in 1918, it was a Baltic-German estate, changing owners many times over the centuries. During the manor’s most recent restoration, which was begun in 2009, an original signed and sealed deed from March 21, 1681, was discovered in state archives.

The current main manor house was originally built in the Neo-Gothic style in 1876 and is believed to have been designed by Teodors Zeilers.

Today, Rūmene Manor covers almost 100 hectares. The landscaped park and the surrounding fields and woods are home to many rare species of flora and are a bird-watchers paradise. The park is believed to have been designed by the landscape architect Georg Kuphaldt, who also designed many of the Riga’s well-known parks in the 1800s.
