Opera Square, Riga
The Opera Square is located between the Latvian National Opera, the Freedom Monument, the Aspāzija Bulvāris and the Riga Canal. There are one of the most beautiful works of gardeners of Riga in opera greenery.
The opera square is unthinkable without the fountain of the nymph discovered in 1887. The legend tells that its author August Folc created the image of a graceful woman by a similarity to the model in which he fell in love and later married. The fountain sculptures have been unleashed in the zinc as it was customary in the 19th century, but this material “greens” over the years, and Mirdza Lukaza restored it and made it in bronze. In 2017, the image and the fountain itself were restored.
There is also a monument of ballet dancer Māris Liepa, made by Estonian sculptors, professors Jān Tomiks and Jiri Ojaver.
In front of the Latvian National Opera there is also a small bust of conductor, composer and professor Leonīds Vīgner, the original of which was created by the artist Lea Davidova Medene in the 50s, and a copy is there. There is the attractive mayor of Riga George Armitsted, his wife’s and the Chow Chow doggy monument on the opposite side of the square.
