Lake Būšnieki has become a wonderful destination for all active leisure lovers. The coast of Lake Būšnieki is a nature reserve that was established in 2004 to protect various biotopes of European significance. It is 49 hectares wide and is included in the European Protected Areas Natura 2000 network. There are well-equipped swimming and picnic areas, bicycle stands, as well as boardwalks for the convenience of all those who also enjoy active water sports.

Today, the "Infrastructure improvment of the "Būšnieku lake bank" conservation area" is fully implemented, which allows the the city's residents and it's guests to go on a 8 km long cycling route around the Būšnieku lake - a pedestrian and cycling path has been built around the lake from the boat base in Staldzenes street to Talsu street (3,424 km long), 187 m long foot-bridge with a bird watching platform at the end, which has two benches and a informative plaque with images of of the nesting and passing birds found in Būšnieku lake. Informative stands about the conservation area and its flora and fauna. Active lifestyle enthusiasts are also joyful with the built health trail with 10 exercise stands for all age groups.
The newly biult foot-bridge with a viewing platform will be a great benefit for ornithologists. There are around 34 bird species around the lake which during the nesting time focuses on the SW part of Būšnieku lake.
