Gulbene railway station

The most architecturally significant building in the railway junction is the passenger building of the Gulbene railway station, built in 1926 according to the project of the well-known professor of architecture Pēteris Feders. It is considered one of the largest and most modern railway station buildings in Latvia at that time. In the past, Gulbene was an important junction station, but today, after the closure of the railway lines Ieriķi–Gulbene and Gulbene–Abrene (Pitalova), it is of minor importance. The intensity of freight transport operations is low in Gulbene, but the passenger train from Riga runs only on weekends. There is still regular railway traffic to Alūksne – two pairs of narrow-gauge passenger trains per day are provided. In order to revive the almost unused building and supplement the tourist offer in the town of Gulbene, on 1 September 2018, an educational and interactive centre “Railway and Steam” was established in the building of the Gulbene railway station.
